Alexander Skene was Treasurer of the City of Edinburgh and Dean of the Guild of Aberdeen when he and his wife, Lilias, were convinced as Quakers in 1669. In 1672, Aberdeen Monthly Meeting resolved to record a general history of the Society of Friends in Scotland. At that time, some of the earliest members were instructed to visit Alexander Skene to assist him with this work. Skene himself was imprisoned "merely for the act of public worship" in 1676 or 1677.
